Bali has turned upside down. After a short period of relative calm the vulcano had become very active. Code red has been issued again and thousands of people went to the refugee- camps in the past days. Heavy ash rains came down on the area around the mountain. Crops have been buried under a grey mass and rivers are polluted and poisoned by the cold lava flows. This wil cause longterm problems.
Kolewa Foundation visits the camps in Karangasem since september. The number of evacuees are even bigger now and the circumstances more poignant. We bring food, personal care products and tarpaulins, for the children also crafts materials and toys.
For emergency aid we need money, per day of outreach we spent about 8.000.000 – 12.500.000 idr (500 – 800 euro). With this we can provide 6 camps with a stock of vegetables, oil, tempeh, salted fish, coffeem tea, mie, washing powder, soap etc. etc. With tarpaulins (the rain season has started with heavy rain showers) we will need another 125 euro per day. At this moments we go 1 to 2 times a week depending on sufficient donations. This frequency is not enough.
We maken an inventory in advance for medication and pain killers. There are many elderly with problems, but also lack of hygiene, good toilets and showers and the rain is cause of diseases and inconveniences.
We do our groceries on the market to keep our costs low. The sellers already know us. For transportation we use our own Kolewa Medicar and our schoolbus and yes, before going up into the mountains petrol must be refueled.
