Children with a physical disability have the right to a dignified human life. We want them to grow up like any other child. We offer them help with the following medical problems:
Cleft lip and palate
We finance the operations for children with a cleft lip or open palate. After the operation we give the children and their parents information how to keep it clean by brushing teeth properly. And we give speech therapy for effectively use of the recovered lip. Every year we help 120-150 children with cleft lip and palate surgeries.
Burns
Another problem we often see are children with physical deformations by severe burns, often caused by falling of hot oil lamps or cooking on open flames. During the annual ‘burns surgery marathon’, these patients are helped. The recovery is often a long process and we give aftercare as much as needed. Often, after surgery, children go to the physiotherapist to learn walking again.
We also help children with other disease such as spina bifida, hydrocephalus or anus atresia.
Before the children are operated, they are taken care of with one parent in our shelter ‘Rumah Bicara’. Every day there is a program for children and parents such as home-schooling, toothbrush lessons, speech therapy, song and dance, creativity, sports, English lessons and more. Depending on their disease, the children stay varying from 21 days to 6 months, some even longer. Usually 30-35 people stay in our shelter. You understand that the exploitation of our shelter requires money day by day.
Deaf and hard of hearing children
In addition to surgeries, we also fund the education of deaf and hard of hearing children in case the parents cannot pay for it. ‘Rumah Bicara’ is also shelter for the children with hearing problems of our school project. Twice a week they come here for extra speech therapy. In addition to speech lessons and supportive sign language learnings, attention is paid for learning and playing in a creative way.
Water filter project
Since 2017 we have started the water filter project. In a simple way we provide families with a filtering system. This allows water from wells, ditches and rivers to be cleaned into drinking water. With a donation of 25 euros you already help a family a filter.
